At a Glance

From the Heart is a concept for an art museum that empowers BIPOC and makes art accessible to all groups of people. The goal of this website is to make sure that people of color are represented and feel empowered to engage in important discussions surrounding art and socio-political issues. In order to achieve this, I wanted to implement a website that is visually pleasing, easy to navigate, and encourages people to visit the museum!

Problem

The largest group of museum visitors are non-Hispanic white individuals with a Bachelor’s degree or higher, which can make people of color and those without higher education feel excluded from these spaces and art discussions. My goal is to make them feel welcome and empowered to share their ideas and creativity in these settings.

Style

Color Palette

I chose deep blue, vermilion, tan, black, and white to represent the brand because this palette balances professionalism with warmth and approachability. The deep blue conveys trust and reliability, vermilion adds energy and passion, tan offers a neutral, comforting tone, while black and white ensure a clean and sophisticated look.

Logo

The logo features a heart intertwined with a line-drawing of a paintbrush, symbolizing the brand's commitment to love, empathy, and community.

Typefaces

I opted for Futura for the headings and buttons to give the site a bold and clean look. For the body text, I went with Lato because it has a softer, less striking appearance. Both fonts are crisp and legible to ensure readability and inclusivity.

Impact

Many museums and their online platforms exude a sense of coldness and formality, lacking the warmth and vibrancy that could make them inviting to a wider audience. This exclusivity and seriousness can deter many potential visitors, particularly those who typically feel excluded from the art world. My primary aim was to craft a website that feels welcoming and friendly, one that showcases a diverse array of individuals and conveys a message of inclusivity and a commitment to socio-political change.

Audience

My main audience falls within the age range of 25-44, which is commonly seen among museum visitors. However, people of color are not as frequently represented in this demographic. Currently, the majority of artists who sustain themselves through their work are white, with only a small fraction—less than 10%—being Black, Asian, or Hispanic. My goal is to make the website appealing to both BIPOC individuals and those without a college degree, ensuring that everyone feels welcome and able to engage with the world of art.

Lessons

Creating this website mock-up not only taught me valuable lessons in design and inclusivity but also sparked a passion for branding design. Through research, I was able to gain more insights into elitism within the art world and its digital presence. Experimentation with layouts, fonts, and colors revealed firsthand the impact of design choices on accessibility and user experience. This project also allowed me to enhance my Figma skills, particularly in interactive prototyping, improving my understanding of its features. This experience has solidified my passion for inclusive design, and also provided an opportunity to explore brand identity and logo design, expanding my skill set in visual communication.
